Sunflower Unit Study + Van Gogh Unit

Sunflowers are everywhere and so beautiful as we get closer to fall.

This Unit Study was inspired by a project the library set up. We absolutely love the cut shapes and ideas they lead to. Ms. Kelly is our absolute favorite!

Shapes cut out at our local library for a Story Time project. We usually take the pieces and glue them down or color them at home. You could also make individual petals, paper snowflakes, or look up a Chinese lantern pattern and edit it

We talked about Vincent Van Gogh a bit. We will focus on him and his art for several weeks. Once a week we go to the local art gallery after music class. We will look at some Van Gogh books during that time.

Books

We absolutely LOVE both of these book series.

The Bad Seed is a lovely book that shows the story of how this sunflower became bad and how he wants to be good.

Garden Time takes the reader through planting seeds, insects, pollination, and all the way to the market or table.

Garden Time from the Hello, World! Series is one of our favorite books! It is a board book but is fantastic and interesting to me as an adult. There's a lot of little extras in it as well.

This cute and sweet story goes through the lifecycle of a sunflower at the end for a bit of science.

Counting to Tar Beach is a board book featuring numbers 1-10. The original book Tar Beach by Faith Ringold does not have the much to do with this unit but the board book has an absolutely beautiful sunflower quilt in the end. It's definitely worth a look. It makes me think of the quilts of Gees Bend.

Here is a book list about children's books about Vincent Van Gogh  from a lovely art box subscription website
